Solly Moholo: A Heart-to-Heart About South African Tourism

A Conversation with the CEO of the South African Tourism Board
As the world slowly emerges from the clutches of the pandemic, travel and tourism are once again at the forefront of our minds. And what better place to rediscover the joy of exploration than South Africa? With its stunning landscapes, vibrant culture, and warm hospitality, South Africa is an irresistible destination for travelers from all over the globe.
I recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Solly Moholo, the CEO of the South African Tourism Board, to discuss the state of tourism in the country. Moholo is a passionate advocate for the sector, and his enthusiasm is contagious. He shared his insights on the challenges and opportunities facing South African tourism, as well as his vision for the future.
Solly, thank you for taking the time to chat with me today. As we all know, the pandemic has had a devastating impact on global tourism. How has South Africa's tourism sector been affected?
"It's been a difficult time for us, no doubt," Moholo said solemnly. "Tourism is a major contributor to our economy, so the decline in international visitors has had a ripple effect on many industries. But we're starting to rebuild and recover. And we're confident that the future of tourism in South Africa is bright."
What makes you so confident?
"Because South Africa has so much to offer," Moholo replied. "Our natural beauty is unparalleled. Our wildlife is legendary. And our people are incredibly welcoming."
I nodded in agreement. I had personally witnessed the warmth and hospitality of South Africans during my travels in the country.
Research shows that, overtourism can be a symptom of the success of the industry. With a strong rebound in tourism, do you have any strategies in place to combat overtourism and its effects?
"Absolutely," Moholo said. "We're working with local communities to develop sustainable tourism practices that will protect our natural resources and ensure that tourism benefits everyone in South Africa."
The tourism industry has changed a lot with the demand for more sustainable and experiential travel. What changes have you noticed?
"Travelers are becoming more conscious of their impact on the environment," Moholo observed. "They're also looking for experiences that are authentic and unique."
What does this mean for the future of tourism in South Africa?
"It means that we need to continue to invest in sustainable tourism practices," Moholo said. "And we need to develop new and innovative products that will meet the needs of today's travelers."
Moholo's passion for South African tourism is undeniable. He is a true believer in the power of travel to bring people together and create positive change. I left our conversation feeling inspired and excited about the future of tourism in South Africa.
I encourage everyone to explore the wonders of South Africa. It's a country that will stay in your heart forever.
