Spirit Airlines flight Haiti

On 28 February 2023, a Spirit Airlines Airbus A320-200, registration N509NK, operating flight NK1410 from Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport to Toussaint Louverture International Airport, Port-au-Prince, Haiti, was hit by gunfire as it approached Port-au-Prince. The aircraft was damaged, but landed safely at Santo Domingo–Las Américas International Airport in the Dominican Republic.

Spirit Airlines acknowledged the incident, stating that "the aircraft landed safely after the crew took evasive action." The airline also stated that "there were no injuries to our Guests or Crew Members." The incident is under investigation by the Haitian authorities.

The incident comes amid a surge in violence in Haiti. In recent months, there have been several reports of gunfire and other violence at the Toussaint Louverture International Airport. In October 2022, a JetBlue Airways flight was also hit by gunfire as it approached the airport.

The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued a warning to US airlines about the risks of flying to Haiti. The FAA has advised airlines to "exercise caution" when flying to the country and to "be aware of the potential for security risks."

The incident has raised concerns about the safety of air travel to Haiti. Several airlines have suspended flights to the country, and others are requiring passengers to sign waivers before flying there.

The Haitian government has condemned the incident and has vowed to investigate. The government has also said that it is working to improve security at the Toussaint Louverture International Airport.

The incident is a reminder of the ongoing challenges in Haiti. The country has been struggling with political instability, violence, and poverty for many years. The incident is a setback to efforts to improve the country's tourism industry.
