St Bakhita School

Love, resilience, and hope: The story of St. Bakhita School
In the heart of the slums of Nairobi, Kenya, where poverty, inequality, and lack of opportunity are rampant, there lies an oasis of hope and transformation: St. Bakhita School. Founded by the Comboni Missionary Sisters, St. Bakhita School provides a lifeline for underprivileged children, offering them a chance to break the cycle of poverty and build a brighter future.
Born from compassion
The school was established in 2006 by Sr. Irene Gleeson, a Comboni missionary who was deeply moved by the plight of street children in Nairobi. Sr. Irene had witnessed firsthand the challenges these children faced - homelessness, hunger, abuse, and lack of access to education. Driven by compassion and a unwavering belief in the power of education to change lives, she set out on a mission to create a safe and nurturing environment where these vulnerable children could thrive.
A beacon of hope in the slums
St. Bakhita School began humbly, with just a few students and a small staff. However, through the dedication and hard work of Sr. Irene and her team, the school has grown over the years to become a beacon of hope in the Mathare slums. Today, St. Bakhita School serves over 450 students, ranging from kindergarten to high school.
Transforming lives through education
St. Bakhita School goes beyond providing traditional academic instruction. It offers a holistic education that focuses on developing the whole child - intellectually, socially, emotionally, and spiritually. The school's curriculum emphasizes critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity. Students are encouraged to ask questions, express their ideas, and pursue their passions.
Nurturing resilience and self-belief
In addition to academics, St. Bakhita School places great importance on nurturing resilience and self-belief in its students. The school creates a supportive and inclusive environment where children feel valued and respected. Students are taught the importance of self-discipline, perseverance, and teamwork. They are encouraged to believe in themselves and to strive for their dreams, no matter how challenging their circumstances may be.
Empowering girls and breaking barriers
St. Bakhita School is particularly committed to empowering girls and breaking down the barriers that prevent them from realizing their full potential. In a society where girls often face discrimination and limited opportunities, the school provides a safe space where girls can learn, grow, and develop their leadership skills.
Inspiring stories of transformation
The impact of St. Bakhita School can be seen in the lives of its students. Many graduates of the school have gone on to pursue higher education, secure gainful employment, and become valuable members of their community. Their stories are a testament to the transformative power of education and the dedication of the staff at St. Bakhita School.
A call to action
The work of St. Bakhita School is vital, but it cannot be sustained without the support of the wider community. The school relies on donations from individuals, organizations, and governments to cover its operating costs and provide scholarships for students. By supporting St. Bakhita School, you can help change the lives of underprivileged children in Nairobi and give them the opportunity to reach their full potential.
