St Swithin

The weather folklore surrounding St Swithin's Day, July 15, is well-known in the United Kingdom.

The saying goes that if it rains on St Swithin's Day, it will continue to rain for the next 40 days.

Now, I'm not one for superstition, but I have to say that the weather on St Swithin's Day this year was absolutely dreadful. It rained cats and dogs, and I couldn't help but think that there might be some truth to the old wives' tale.

I mean, let's be honest, the British weather is pretty unpredictable at the best of times. But a whole 40 days of rain? That's just taking the biscuit.

So, I started to do a little bit of research into the history of St Swithin's Day. And it turns out that the legend actually dates back to the 9th century.

According to the story, St Swithin was a bishop who was buried outside in a churchyard, rather than inside the church as was the custom at the time. When it rained on the day of his burial, people took it as a sign that he was unhappy with his burial place.

And so, the legend of St Swithin's Day was born.

Now, I don't know about you, but I find that story to be rather touching. It's a reminder that even in death, our loved ones are still watching over us.

So, the next time it rains on St Swithin's Day, don't despair. Just think of it as a little reminder from St Swithin that he's still looking out for us.

And who knows, maybe it will bring us a little bit of good luck.
