Tampines accident driver says he 'panicked'

The driver of the car that crashed into a bus stop in Tampines on Tuesday (Feb 28) has spoken out about the accident, saying that he "panicked" after losing control of his vehicle.

"I was driving along Tampines Avenue 1 when I suddenly lost control of the car," said the driver, who only wanted to be known as Mr Tan. "I tried to brake, but it was too late. I crashed into the bus stop."

Five people were injured in the accident, including a pregnant woman and a two-year-old girl. All five were taken to hospital, but their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Mr Tan said he was "deeply sorry" for the accident and that he was "cooperating fully" with the police investigation.

The accident has raised questions about the safety of bus stops in Singapore. Some residents have called for the bus stops to be made safer, such as by installing barriers or fences.

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) said it is "reviewing the safety of bus stops in Tampines" and will "take appropriate measures to enhance safety".

In the meantime, the LTA has urged motorists to drive carefully and to be aware of their surroundings.

Here are some of the things you can do to stay safe when driving:

  • Obey the speed limit.
  • Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Avoid distractions, such as using your phone or eating.
  • Make sure your car is in good working order.
  • Get enough sleep before driving.
  • Never drink and drive.

By following these simple tips, you can help to reduce the risk of accidents and keep yourself and others safe.
