Mr. Davis' Teaching Philosophies

1. Progressivism

“Progressivists believe that education should focus on the whole child, rather on the content or the teacher” (Cohen).

2. Social Reconstruction

“Social Reconstructionism is a philosophy that emphasizes the addressing of social questions and a quest to create a better society and worldwide democracy” (Cohen).

As I envision who I will be as an educator and what my goals are, these philosophies are very helpful in understanding what my motivations as an individual have become since I’ve not been a student in quite some time, and how I will be able to use them for good, and to teach future students.  It is my goal to be flexible, and to encourage the use of facts, not just opinions in the classrooms.

Also, at the primary level, I believe that it is valuable to create a trusting environment with a policy of fairness and fun.  When students believe that their teacher genuinely cares about their overall health and learning, as supported by a classroom where ideas are fostered through facts, fairness, and fun, it is my experience that they begin to thrive as people.

Within their respective cores, Progressivism and Social Reconstructivism put students into active roles of their own lives and stories, and as a teacher it is my responsibility to supply the tools and compassion to make this possible.
