TfL cyber attack: What happened and what's the latest?

Commuters in London woke up to a morning of chaos on Wednesday 11th January 2023, as a cyber attack on Transport for London (TfL) caused severe disruption to the capital's transport network
The attack, which began overnight, targeted TfL's internal systems, including those responsible for managing traffic signals and train timetables.
As a result, traffic signals were malfunctioning, and train services were severely disrupted across the Underground, Overground, and DLR networks
Commuters were advised to avoid traveling unless absolutely necessary, and many were forced to find alternative routes to work or school.

The Metropolitan Police and the National Crime Agency are investigating the attack, and TfL is working to restore services as quickly as possible.
However, it is unclear how long it will take to resolve the issue, and commuters are being advised to check TfL's website for the latest updates

In a statement, TfL said:
"We are working closely with the police and other agencies to investigate this incident and ensure that our systems are secure. We are sorry for the disruption this is causing to our customers and we are working hard to restore services as quickly as possible."
The cyber attack on TfL is the latest in a series of high-profile attacks on critical infrastructure in the UK
In 2021, the NHS was hit by a ransomware attack that caused widespread disruption to healthcare services.
The government has warned that the UK is facing an increasing threat from cyber attacks, and has called on businesses and organizations to take steps to improve their cybersecurity
Here are some tips to help protect your business from cyber attacks:
  • Use strong passwords and change them regularly.
  • Keep your software up to date.
  • Be careful about what you click on in emails and on the internet.
  • Back up your data regularly.
  • Have a plan in place in case of a cyber attack.
