The International 2024

The ten years flew by, for the tournament and for me

Ten years ago this week, I had the pleasure of covering The International (TI) 2014. It was my first time attending the event, and I was blown away by the scale and passion of the Dota 2 community.

I've been fortunate enough to cover every TI since then, and it's been amazing to watch the tournament grow and evolve. In 2014, the prize pool was $10.9 million, and it has since grown to over $30 million. The number of teams competing has also increased, from 16 to 18. And the level of play has never been higher.

The storylines to watch

This year's TI is shaping up to be one of the most exciting yet. Several storylines are worth watching:

  • Can Team Liquid win a second straight title? Liquid is the defending champion, and they're looking to become the first team to win TI twice in a row since OG in 2018-2019.
  • Will Evil Geniuses be able to challenge for the title? EG is the most successful team in North American Dota 2 history, but they've never won TI. They'll be looking to change that this year.
  • Can China break its TI curse? A Chinese team has never won TI, and the pressure is on PSG.LGD to end that streak.
  • Will there be any surprises? TI is always full of surprises, and this year is likely to be no different. Keep an eye on teams like Virtus.pro, Tundra Esports, and Team Spirit.
