The Voice of Joy: Meet the Opera Singer Behind the 'Gio Compario' Advert

"To me, singing is like breathing. It's something I have to do, something I can't live without."
The world knows him as Gio Compario, the flamboyant opera singer from the Go Compare insurance commercials. But behind the exaggerated gestures and comic persona lies a man of extraordinary talent and unwavering passion: Wynne Evans.
Born in the heart of Wales, Wynne's love for music began at an early age. Growing up in a family of singers, the operatic melodies filled his childhood home, instilling in him a profound admiration for the genre.
"Opera is a world of its own," Wynne says with a twinkle in his eye. "It's a place where emotions run high and drama takes center stage."
After graduating from the prestigious Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, Wynne's career skyrocketed. He performed in leading roles at renowned opera houses around the globe, his powerful voice captivating audiences with its rich tapestry of emotions.
But it was a chance encounter that would forever change the course of his career. In 2009, Wynne auditioned for a commercial for Go Compare. Donning his trademark mustache and over-the-top operatic style, he transformed into "Gio Compario" – the flamboyant insurance mascot who would become an instant hit.

"It was a bit of a leap of faith,"

Wynne recalls. "But I saw the humor in the role, and I couldn't resist giving it a shot."
The advert became a cultural phenomenon, propelling Wynne to household name status. However, beneath the slapstick humor, a genuine love for music shone through.
"I wanted to show people that opera could be both entertaining and accessible," Wynne explains. "It's not just for the elite or the stuffy theaters. It's for everyone."
Wynne's passion for music extends beyond his performances. He is an active supporter of young musicians and has established a foundation to provide scholarships to aspiring opera singers.
"I want to create opportunities for others to experience the joy of singing," Wynne says with a smile. "Music has been my lifeblood, and I want to share its power with the world."
As the sun sets on Wynne's illustrious career, his legacy as both an opera star and a tireless advocate for music will undoubtedly endure. The voice that once filled the grand stages of the world now echoes in the hearts of countless individuals, reminding them of the transformative power of art.
