Ticket McDonald's drive-thru

Okay. Here we go again.

This time I'll try to be more specific with my order so the nice young person at the speaker box can understand me. But then again, I'm speaking through a mask. And my car is noisy. And I don't think I enunciate very well anyway.

The first time I used a drive-thru was in the early 1980s. I was with my friend Mike and my niece who was about five years old at the time. It was a brand new McDonald's and the first one that I had ever seen. We drove up to the speaker box and my friend gave his order. Then it was my turn. But I had absolutely no idea how to order through an intercom.

"What do you want to eat?" Mike asked me.
"I don't know," I said.
"They got hamburgers," Mike said.
"Okay," I said. And to the intercom I said, "I'll have a hamburger."

The person at the other end said something like, "What kind of hamburger?" I didn't know there were different kinds of hamburgers.
"Just a hamburger," I said.
"Do you want cheese on that?" the person asked.

I looked over at my friend. "Do you want cheese on your hamburger?" I asked him.
My friend was laughing so hard that he could barely talk.
"Yes!" he said. "Get cheese on your hamburger!"
"Okay," I said into the intercom. "I want cheese on my hamburger. And ketchup." I didn't know if they put ketchup on hamburgers or not. I had never eaten a hamburger from McDonald's before.

At the window, I handed the young lady a five dollar bill. She handed me my change and my food.
"Is there anything else I can get for you?" she asked.
"No, thank you," I said.

I drove off and parked the car. I opened the bag. There was my hamburger, fries, and a small drink. I took a bite of the hamburger. It was delicious! I had never had a hamburger so good in my life.

I've been a fan of McDonald's ever since.
