English-language support group for mothers around Tokyo

TMG (formerly known as the Tokyo New Mothers Group) is a support and contact group for mothers in Tokyo. We are an English-speaking group but our members are from every corner of the globe and all walks of life.

TMG aims to provide a social and support network for not only new mothers and mothers new to Tokyo, but all mothers living in Tokyo through a wide variety of parenting resources including regular meetings, events, practical advice and useful information.

TMG is a wonderful chance for you and you child to participate in activities around Tokyo and meet other mothers and their children.

Get-togethers & Events

We generally get together 2-3 times a month on a Wednesday.  Our meetings are normally held in Central Tokyo in various places and, if the weather is good, we enjoy some of Tokyo's parks.

As well as our regular get-togethers, we also try to hold other fun events, such as zoo trips and movie days.

We also hold information sessions on topics of interest to mothers and organize various activities and special events that the whole family can attend.  These activities/events and our regular meetings may target specific age groups (babies, toddlers, preschoolers).

Services & Support

In addition to our meetings and events, we offer the following services and support to our members:

Mentor Program:  For those new to Tokyo and/or motherhood, we have a mentor program to provide personalized support.  To find out more about our mentor program, click here.

Website & Mailing List:  Members have access to the members-only section of our website where we have a calendar of our upcoming events, a resources section which provides a wealth of useful information for mothers in Tokyo, a forum where mothers can post questions and exchange opinions and information on issues relevant to mothers in Tokyo, a members directory and much much more.  In addition, members can read about our latest activities and upcoming events in our newsletters and post anouncements through the mailing list.

Volunteers

TMG is an entirly independent, non-profit association run by volunteers.  TMG is always looking for volunteers.  There are some great ideas in the pipelines that we hope to get off the ground, and if you have any ideas of your own that you'd like to see flourish or if you feel you have something to offer us in terms of help, we would love to hear from you!  Remember, TMG is YOUR group so let's all work together to make it the best it can be!

TMG now has a Facebook group ("Tokyo mothers group") ! Our community of international mothers is very active and growing everyday. Join us to get TMG updates on your profile news feed and easily interact with other mothers and TMG coordinators.

History

The Tokyo New Mothers Group was created by Allison in 2006 in response to her own experience as a new mother in Tokyo as a way to keep in touch with other new mothers she met through the Tokyo Pregnancy Group.  With the support of Yuki and Andrea, the first coordinators, membership grew to over 200.

In 2008, the current coordinators wanted to be more inclusive as a group and support mothers of babies and children of all ages.  As a result, the group's name was changed to the Tokyo Mothers Group, as this name was thought to be more befitting.

This website was launched in September 2008 in conjunction with the new name and provided the group with one central location to base our online activities.  You can visit the old blog or forum (which still includes a wealth of information).
