Tony Book




Tony Book was a true legend of Manchester City. He played for the club for over a decade, captaining them to their first major trophy in 1969. After retiring from playing, he went on to manage the club for a further seven years, leading them to another FA Cup triumph in 1976.
Book was born in Bath in 1934 and began his career with local side Bath City. He joined Manchester City in 1965 and quickly established himself as a key player in the team. He was a tough-tackling defender who was also comfortable on the ball. He played in the 1969 FA Cup Final against Leicester City, which Manchester City won 1-0.
Book was appointed player-manager of Manchester City in 1973. He led the club to victory in the 1976 FA Cup Final, beating Newcastle United 2-1. He also led the club to the semi-finals of the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1977.
Book left Manchester City in 1980 and went on to manage a number of other clubs, including Plymouth Argyle, Mansfield Town and Port Vale. He retired from management in 1990 and was appointed honorary president of Manchester City in 2004.
Book was a true gentleman of the game. He was respected by players, managers and fans alike. He was a great servant to Manchester City and will be forever remembered as one of the club's greatest legends. He passed away in 2025 at the age of 90.
