Freshman Patriots quarterback Mac Jones tossed for his first score in the second quarter of Sunday's season opener against the Dolphins, and partners assumed Jones — justifiably — might need the ball.
He didn't. Colleagues attempted twice to hand Jones the ball, and the multiple times he gave it back as he ran to the seat, where he thudded down and started relaxing.
"Since that doesn't actually matter," a disappointed Jones said after the Patriots fell 17-16 when inquired as to why he didn't need it. "It was one score, we need to score more. Dislike the game was over in that general area. However, I mean, we need to improve in the red zone and get more scores, and we will."
The score accompanied 2:30 leftover in the main half. Jones ran a play-activity and dropped back to one side. As the Dolphins shut in, he terminated to Nelson Agholor close to the 3-yard line. Agholor ran into the end zone and gave the Patriots a 10-7 lead.
The Dolphins walked down the field and changed over a field objective that tied the game before halftime.
Jones completed the primary half 14-for-19 with 133 yards. He was sacked once for a 13-yard misfortune. His score was gone before by maybe his best pass of the primary half — one more association with Agholor.
Jones' score drive and his first-half numbers assisted form with sponsorship an unremarkable first pass endeavor, which was managed a mishandle.
Jones' previous Alabama partner Tua Tagovailoa, the beginning quarterback for the Dolphins, completed the main half 9-for-17 with 128 yards.
