During his postgame news gathering, Howard said he tried to avoid Wisconsin requiring a break with 15 seconds left and the Badgers driving by 15.

"I thought it was excessive right now, particularly being an enormous lead," Howard said.

Gard said he called the break since his stores were in the game and just had four seconds to get the ball past midcourt. A break allows them 10 seconds.

"I was not going to set them ready, where the ball had as of now gotten taken outside the field of play, to need to break a press in four seconds," Gard said.

For said he responded after somebody from Wisconsin set hands on him. He said that "by then, I felt the time had come to safeguard myself."

Video showed Gard had his hands contacting Howard's arm or wrist region while attempting to clarify why he called the break.

"Somebody contacted me, and I think it was very inappropriate, for them to contact me, as we were expressing and speaking with each other," Howard said. "That heightened it."

Wisconsin athletic chief Chris McIntosh said he previously had reached Big Ten Commissioner Kevin Warren about the circumstance, adding that Wisconsin had staff individuals who were "impacted and harmed."
