Tranmere Rovers




Tranmere Rovers is a professional association football club based in Birkenhead, Merseyside, England. The team competes in EFL League Two, the fourth tier of the English football league system. Tranmere Rovers was founded in 1884 and has played at Prenton Park since 1912.

History

Tranmere Rovers was founded on 15 August 1884 as Belmont Football Club. The club's first match was a friendly against Birkenhead Rangers, which Tranmere Rovers won 4-0. The club joined the Cheshire Football Association in 1885 and won the Cheshire Senior Cup in 1886 and 1887.

Tranmere Rovers joined the Football League in 1921 and played in the Third Division North until 1938, when they were relegated to the Fourth Division. The club returned to the Third Division North in 1950 and won the league title in 1956. Tranmere Rovers played in the Second Division from 1956 to 1960, when they were relegated back to the Third Division.

Tranmere Rovers won the Third Division title again in 1976 and were promoted to the Second Division. The club played in the Second Division from 1976 to 1988, when they were relegated back to the Third Division. Tranmere Rovers won the Third Division championship in 1990 and were promoted to the Second Division.

Tranmere Rovers played in the Second Division from 1990 to 1991, when they were promoted to the First Division. The club played in the First Division from 1991 to 1995, when they were relegated back to the Second Division.

Tranmere Rovers were relegated to the Third Division in 2001. The club played in the Third Division from 2001 to 2004, when they were promoted to the Second Division. Tranmere Rovers played in the Second Division from 2004 to 2009, when they were relegated back to the Third Division.

Tranmere Rovers were relegated to the Fourth Division in 2015. The club played in the Fourth Division from 2015 to 2019, when they were promoted to the Third Division.

Tranmere Rovers were promoted to the Second Division in 2022. The club plays in the Second Division today.

Stadium

Tranmere Rovers play their home matches at Prenton Park, which has a capacity of 16,581. Prenton Park was opened in 1912 and is the oldest football stadium in England.

Rivals

Tranmere Rovers' main rivals are Birkenhead neighbours Tranmere Rovers. The two clubs have played each other in the Merseyside derby since 1884.
