Tyler Bleyendaal: An Ireland International with Māori Roots

It's not often you come across a rugby player who can trace their roots back to both Ireland and New Zealand. But that's exactly the case with Tyler Bleyendaal, the former Munster and Ireland out-half.

Bleyendaal made his debut for Ireland in 2014 and went on to win 22 caps for his adopted country. He was also part of the Ireland squad that won the Six Nations in 2015 and 2018.

But before he ever played for Ireland, Bleyendaal was a rising star in New Zealand rugby. He played for the New Zealand Under-20s and was part of the Crusaders squad that won the Super Rugby title in 2011.

So how did a Kiwi end up playing for Ireland? Well, it all started with his mother, who was born in Ireland. When Bleyendaal was young, his family moved to Ireland and he grew up playing rugby there.

Bleyendaal is a proud Irishman and he has never forgotten his Māori roots. He is a passionate advocate for the Māori culture and he regularly visits New Zealand to connect with his family and learn more about his heritage.

In 2019, Bleyendaal announced his retirement from international rugby to focus on his club career with Munster. He is now one of the most experienced players in the Pro14 and he continues to be a key figure for Munster.

Bleyendaal is a true role model for young people, both in Ireland and New Zealand. He is a talented rugby player, a proud Irishman, and a passionate advocate for the Māori culture.

He is an inspiration to us all.
