The UFC came to Las Vegas this past weekend for UFC 311, and it was a night that fans will not soon forget. In the main event, Jorge Masvidal took on Kamaru Usman for the welterweight championship. Masvidal came into the fight on short notice after Gilbert Burns had to withdraw due to testing positive for COVID-19, so Usman was a bit of a favorite going in.
But Masvidal surprised everyone by putting up a great fight. He was able to take Usman down several times and even had him in some trouble on the ground, but Usman was ultimately too strong and too technical. He was able to eventually take Masvidal down and submit him in the second round.
In the co-main event, Rose Namajunas defended her strawweight championship against Weili Zhang. This was a rematch of their fight last year, which Namajunas won by knockout. Zhang was looking for revenge, but Namajunas was once again too much for her. She was able to outstrike Zhang and eventually submit her in the first round.
The rest of the card was also full of exciting fights. In the lightweight division, Beneil Dariush submitted Scott Holtzman in the first round. In the welterweight division, Neil Magny defeated Geoff Neal by decision. And in the women's bantamweight division, Macy Chiasson submitted Marion Reneau in the first round.
UFC 311 was a great night of fights, and it will be remembered as one of the best events of the year.
