In the realm of Hindu mythology, Vaikunta Ekadasi holds a special significance as the day when the gates to Vaikunta, Lord Vishnu's heavenly abode, are said to open wide.
As we prepare to celebrate Vaikunta Ekadasi in 2025, let's embark on a storytelling journey to explore the spiritual significance and observances associated with this divine occasion.
Legend has it that the demon king Bali conquered the three worlds and even challenged Lord Vishnu for their possession. To restore the cosmic balance, Lord Vishnu took on the form of Vamana, a dwarf Brahmin, and approached Bali for a boon.
Bali, known for his generosity, agreed to grant Vamana any three wishes. With his first step, Vamana covered the entire earth, and with his second, he covered the heavens. For his third wish, he asked Bali to surrender his remaining space, which was just enough to accommodate the tip of his toe.
As Vamana placed his third step on Bali's head, he pushed him deep into the earth, where he remained confined. However, Lord Vishnu, impressed by Bali's devotion, granted him the boon of ruling the netherworld and promised that on Vaikunta Ekadasi, the gates of Vaikunta would remain open, allowing Bali to visit his heavenly abode.
From that day forward, Vaikunta Ekadasi has been celebrated as a day when devotees can seek blessings from Lord Vishnu and attain spiritual liberation. On this day, temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu, such as the famous Tirumala Venkateswara Temple, witness a surge of devotees who come to offer their prayers and participate in the sacred rituals.
