Who is Valerie Bertinelli?
Valerie Bertinelli is an American actress, author, and television personality. She is best known for her roles as Barbara Cooper Royer on the CBS sitcom One Day at a Time and as Melanie Moretti on the TV Land sitcom Hot in Cleveland. Bertinelli has also appeared in a number of films, including Touched by an Angel (1988), Say Anything... (1989), and The Wedding Singer (1998). In addition to her acting work, Bertinelli has written several books, including Losing It: And Gaining My Life Back One Pound at a Time (2008) and Enough Already: Learning to Love the Way I Am Today (2012). She is also a spokesperson for the Jenny Craig weight loss program.
Early life and career
Valerie Ann Bertinelli was born on April 23, 1960, in Wilmington, Delaware. Her parents are Andy Bertinelli, an Italian-American businessman, and Nancy Bertinelli (née Hansen), a homemaker. Bertinelli has two older brothers, Anthony and Mark. She grew up in Claymont, Delaware, and attended Padua Academy, an all-girls Catholic high school.
Bertinelli began her acting career at the age of 15, when she appeared in a television commercial for Mattel's Barbie doll. She made her film debut in the 1976 movie C.H.O.M.P.S., and her television debut in the 1978 episode of the NBC sitcom The Magical World of Disney.
One Day at a Time
In 1979, Bertinelli was cast as Barbara Cooper Royer on the CBS sitcom One Day at a Time. The show was a critical and commercial success, and it ran for nine seasons, from 1979 to 1984. Bertinelli's performance as Barbara earned her a Golden Globe Award in 1981.
Later career
After One Day at a Time ended, Bertinelli continued to act in film and television. She appeared in a number of movies, including Touched by an Angel (1988), Say Anything... (1989), and The Wedding Singer (1998). She also had recurring roles on the TV series Frasier (1993-1995), Touched by an Angel (1994-2003), and Hot in Cleveland (2010-2015).

Personal life
Valerie Bertinelli has been married twice. Her first marriage was to musician Eddie Van Halen, with whom she has a son, Wolfgang. The couple divorced in 2007. In 2011, Bertinelli married financial planner Tom Vitale.
Bertinelli is a breast cancer survivor. She was diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) in 2009, and she underwent a lumpectomy and radiation therapy. Bertinelli is now cancer-free.
