A citizen of a foreign country who wants to enter the United States must first get a US visa. This visa is obtained through a US consulate. This visa is placed in the passport issued to you by your country.

There are two kinds of visas issued by the US consulate. These are immigrant and nonimmigrant visas. Immigrant visas are issued to travel and live permanently in the United States. Nonimmigrant visas are issued when you want to travel to the US for a short term duration.

The visas can only be issued before you start your travel. You obtain the visa from the US consulate in your home country. You cannot get a visa for the US at the airport or from inside the US. So, make sure that you obtain the visa before you start your travel.

Most of the travelers to the United States need a visa and the passport. The border agent at the port of entry will take your visa and verify that you are authorized to enter the United States. The border patrol agent will do this by running your visa number through the system. This number is also known as visa foil number.

The visa number is an eight digit number that is generally printed on the bottom right side of the visa. Sometimes there is one letter followed by seven numbers instead of eight numbers.

It is a good idea to make a copy of the visa or write down the visa number in passport. This is to make sure that in case you lose your passport before the journey, during the journey or even when traveling in the United States, you can reach the US consulate or Department Of Homeland Security to get a new visa so you can continue with your travel.
