Can depression lead you to commit suicide?

My friend is struggling from Depression from a long period of time. She at first used to talk a little bit with us, but now at present, she is not even talking to anyone. She is not even getting out of her room. She eats very little. Sometimes, she even skip meals. Can depression lead you to commit suicide. That day, we friends went to visit her. She was at first not coming out of her room. Then we forced her to come out and sit with us. Even after repeatedly asking she didn't tell us anything.
