Wally Lewis

Back in the day, when I was a young fella growing up in Brisbane, there was one name that sent shivers down the spines of opposing teams and ignited a fire in the hearts of Queenslanders – Wally Lewis.
The King, as he was affectionately known, was more than just a rugby league player; he was a legend, an icon, a symbol of Queensland pride. His unmatched skill, leadership, and unwavering determination made him one of the greatest to ever grace the field.
Lewis's journey to the top was nothing short of extraordinary. Born in humble beginnings, he rose through the ranks with a mix of natural talent and sheer hard work. His ability to read the game, anticipate moves, and execute with precision was second to none.
On the field, Lewis was a sight to behold. With his flowing mullet and trademark headband, he commanded respect from both opponents and teammates alike. He could weave through defenses like a hot knife through butter, setting up tries with his pinpoint passing or scoring them himself with his lightning-fast speed.
But it wasn't just his physical prowess that set Lewis apart. He was a true leader, both on and off the field. His ability to motivate his team, even in the face of adversity, was unparalleled. He demanded excellence from himself and those around him, and he never settled for anything less.
Off the field, Lewis was a humble and down-to-earth bloke. He always had time for his fans, young and old, and he was a tireless advocate for the game he loved. His unwavering commitment to Queensland and the Maroons made him a beloved figure throughout the state.
One of my favorite memories of Lewis was the 1989 State of Origin decider. The series was tied 1-1, and the atmosphere at Lang Park was electric. Lewis led the Maroons to a famous victory, scoring a try and setting up another. It was a moment of pure brilliance, and it cemented his status as a Queensland legend.
Lewis's legacy extends far beyond his playing days. He has become a mentor to young players, a commentator, and a successful businessman. His passion for the game and his love for Queensland continue to inspire generations of players and fans alike.
In a world where sports stars come and go, Wally Lewis remains a constant. He is a true icon, a symbol of what it means to be a champion, both on and off the field. His legacy will live on for generations to come, reminding us of the greatness that can be achieved through hard work, determination, and a love of the game.
