Weather warnings

The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) issues weather warnings when extreme weather conditions are expected in the Netherlands. These warnings are color-coded and indicate the severity of the expected weather conditions.

The KNMI issues weather warnings for the following conditions:

  • Freezing road conditions: These warnings are issued when there is a risk of slippery roads due to ice or snow.
  • Strong wind: These warnings are issued when wind speeds are expected to reach or exceed 75 kilometers per hour.
  • Heavy rain: These warnings are issued when heavy rain is expected, which can lead to flooding.
  • Extreme heat: These warnings are issued when the temperature is expected to reach or exceed 35 degrees Celsius.
  • Dense fog: These warnings are issued when visibility is reduced to less than 200 meters due to fog.

When a weather warning is issued, it is important to take the necessary precautions to stay safe. This may include avoiding driving, staying indoors, and securing loose objects.

You can find the latest weather warnings on the KNMI website or through the KNMI app.

Remember, it is always best to err on the side of caution when it comes to weather warnings.
