What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy?
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a form of psychotherapy that emphasizes the way that we think/perceive situations determines the way we feel and behave.
A misconception of CBT is that it is a form of positive thinking. CBT is not about thinking positively about negative situations/experiences. CBT is about thinking about negative situations/experiences realistically and logically. Therefore CBT identifies unhelpful thinking patterns and behaviours that stem from viewing situations/experiences unrealistically and illogically. Once these unhelpful thinking patterns and behaviours have been identified they are challenged and helpful thinking patterns and behaviours are encouraged to be developed. CBT argues that by changing unhelpful thinking patterns and behaviours this in turn leads us to experience healthy negative emotions rather than unhealthy negative emotions which enables us to overcome our problems.
The relationship between the therapist and client is collaborative and all aspects of therapy are explicit. Hence, the therapist and client work together by identifying problems and specifying goals that will enable the client to overcome their problems.
Homework assignments are a central feature of CBT as it is argued that in order for a person to overcome their problems they need to practice the techniques that they have learned during sessions and put behavioural changes in place.
