What Leahnna Erdas Learned on Her Trip to the Arctic Circle

By Leahnna Erdas

I've always been fascinated by the Arctic Circle, a region of the world shrouded in mystery and intrigue. So, when I had the opportunity to join a small group of travelers on a once-in-a-lifetime expedition to the Arctic Circle, I jumped at the chance.

Our journey began in the northernmost town in the world, Hammerfest, Norway. As we boarded the ship that would take us to the Arctic, I couldn't help but feel a surge of excitement mingled with a touch of apprehension. I had never been this far north before, and I wasn't sure what to expect.

As we sailed further and further north, the landscape became increasingly desolate and barren. The only signs of life were the occasional seabird or seal. The weather was also unpredictable, with freezing rain and snow squalls alternating with periods of sunshine.

Despite the harsh conditions, I was instantly captivated by the Arctic's beauty. The towering icebergs, the glistening glaciers, and the endless expanse of white were simply breathtaking. Each day, we ventured out onto the ice, exploring frozen fjords and encountering a variety of Arctic wildlife, including polar bears, walruses, and seals.

One of the most memorable experiences of the trip was a visit to a small Inuit village. The Inuit people have lived in the Arctic for centuries, and they have a deep understanding of the region's unique ecosystem. They showed us how to hunt for seals and build igloos, and they shared stories of their lives in the Arctic.

As our expedition drew to a close, I realized that I had not only witnessed the beauty of the Arctic but also gained a deeper appreciation for the people who live there. The Arctic Circle is a place of extreme challenges, but it is also a place of resilience, beauty, and wonder.

Here are some of the things I learned on my trip to the Arctic Circle:

  • The Arctic is a fragile ecosystem that is threatened by climate change.
  • The Inuit people have a deep connection to the land and a wealth of knowledge about the Arctic environment.
  • The Arctic is a place of beauty and wonder that is unlike anything else on Earth.

I am so grateful for the opportunity to have experienced the Arctic Circle firsthand. It was a life-changing journey that I will never forget.
