When is Earth Day

Earth Day is an annual event celebrated on April 22nd to demonstrate support for environmental protection. First celebrated in 1970, Earth Day now includes a wide range of events coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network in more than 193 countries.

Did you know? Earth Day was first proposed by Gaylord Nelson, a US Senator from Wisconsin, after witnessing the devastating effects of an oil spill off the coast of California in 1969.

  • In 1970, the first Earth Day involved 20 million Americans and led to the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
  • Throughout the 1970s, Earth Day helped raise awareness about environmental issues, leading to the passage of several landmark environmental laws, including the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act.
  • Today, Earth Day is celebrated with a variety of events, including cleanups, tree plantings, and educational programs.

Earth Day is an important day to reflect on our relationship with the environment and to recommit to protecting our planet. Here are a few ways you can get involved:

  • Reduce your carbon footprint: This can include driving less, using less energy at home, and eating less meat.
  • Recycle and compost: Recycling and composting helps to reduce the amount of waste that goes to landfills.
  • Support sustainable businesses: When you shop, choose businesses that are committed to environmental sustainability.
  • Get involved in your community: Volunteer for local cleanups or tree plantings, or get involved in other environmental organizations.

Every little bit helps, and by working together, we can create a more sustainable future for our planet. So let's all make a difference on Earth Day and every day!
