Who is Marco Rubio?
Marco Rubio is an American politician and lawyer, and a member of the Republican Party. He has been the junior United States senator for Florida since 2011. Rubio was previously a member of the Florida House of Representatives from 2000 to 2008, and served as Speaker of the House from 2006 to 2008.
Rubio was born in Miami, Florida, to Cuban parents who had emigrated from Cuba in 1956. He graduated from the University of Florida in 1993 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science and went on to earn a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Miami School of Law in 1996.
Rubio began his political career in 1998 when he was elected to the Florida House of Representatives. He served in the House for eight years, and was elected Speaker of the House in 2006. As Speaker, Rubio led the effort to pass a number of conservative reforms, including a tax cut package and a school choice program.
In 2010, Rubio was elected to the United States Senate. He defeated Democratic incumbent Kendrick Meek by a margin of 49% to 44%. Rubio is a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, the Senate Judiciary Committee, and the Senate Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee.
Rubio is a self-described conservative Republican. He is a strong supporter of the Second Amendment, and opposes abortion and same-sex marriage. Rubio is also a strong advocate for free trade, and has criticized President Obama's trade policies.
