Why Calgary Weather Can Be a Cruel Mistress

When I first moved to Calgary, I was excited to experience the four seasons. I had heard that the city had beautiful summers, mild springs and autumns, and snowy winters. What I didn't realize was that the weather in Calgary can also be a cruel mistress.

One day, it can be warm and sunny, and the next day, it can be snowing sideways. This can make it difficult to plan outdoor activities, and it can also lead to some serious wardrobe malfunctions.

A Tale of Two Winters

I'll never forget the winter of 2013-2014. It was one of the coldest winters on record, and we had snow on the ground for almost six months. The temperature regularly dropped below -30 degrees Celsius, and there were several days when it didn't even reach -20. I remember having to wear so many layers of clothing that I could barely move, and I still managed to get frostbite on my fingers and toes.

The following winter was a completely different story. It was so mild that we only had a few days of snow on the ground. The temperature rarely dropped below -10 degrees Celsius, and there were even a few days when it reached double digits. I remember being able to walk around without a jacket, and I even went for a bike ride in February.

Spring and Summer Surprises

Spring and summer in Calgary can also be unpredictable. One year, we had a beautiful spring with warm temperatures and plenty of sunshine. The next year, we had a cold and rainy spring with snow on the ground in May. Summers in Calgary can also be hit or miss. Some years, we have hot and sunny summers with temperatures in the 30s. Other years, we have cool and rainy summers with temperatures in the teens.

How to Dress for Calgary Weather

The best way to dress for Calgary weather is to be prepared for anything. Always have a warm coat, hat, and gloves on hand, even in the summer. And don't forget to layer your clothing so that you can adjust to the changing temperatures.

Embracing the Unpredictability

As frustrating as Calgary weather can be at times, it's also part of what makes the city so unique. The unpredictability of the weather can make each day an adventure, and it's always a good excuse to stay indoors and cuddle up with a good book or a hot cup of coffee.
