Will the Supermarket Lights be on New Year's Day?

They say that on certain days of the year, you look at the calendar and wonder where did the time go? Is it March already? And what is it with weekends disappearing?
Blink and you’ll miss it, as they say.
That also includes New Year's Day, a day when it seems that time stood still, and yet raced past us at frightening speed.
A day that for many means sleep deprivation, or a long hike in the country or another tradition: sleeping in to the sound of silence.
Or as Billy Idol sang: "Silence is golden."
Whatever your intentions are for the first day of the new year, the quiet around you may cause you to come back to life with growling stomach. Or, on your country walk, you might come across a tempting tearoom and want to stop to eat some cake and drink a cup of tea.
And then you start to wonder, are there any shops open on New Year's Day?
Supermarkets are one of those delights that sometimes open the doors for us on days like these.
So, what are the chances of a supermarket being open on New Year's Day?
Well, that my friend, depends.
In some countries, such as
  • England
  • ,
  • Scotland
  • ,
  • Ireland
  • , and
  • Wales
  • , the shops are open on New Year's Day.

    In other countries, such as
  • France
  • and
  • Spain
  • , the shops are closed.

And then there are countries like
  • Germany
  • , where the shops are only allowed to open on New Year's Day if they are small, family-run businesses.

So, if you're planning on doing some shopping on New Year's Day, be sure to check the opening hours of your local supermarket in advance.
And if you're in a country where the shops are closed, well, then you'll just have to make do with whatever food you have on hand.
Or, you could always go out for a meal at one of the many restaurants that are open on New Year's Day.
Either way, I hope you have a wonderful New Year's Day!
