World Central Kitchen

Joseph Oliver, often known as José Andrés, is a Spanish-American chef and founder of World Central Kitchen (WCK), a non-profit organization devoted to providing meals to those in need around the world.
In 2010, Andrés founded WCK after the Haiti earthquake. He was determined to use his culinary skills to make a genuine impact in the disaster-stricken region. Andrés and his team set up makeshift kitchens and began preparing and distributing meals to those who had lost everything.
Since then, WCK has expanded its operations to over 25 countries, providing meals to victims of natural disasters, conflict, and poverty. The organization has served over 200 million meals to date, and its work has been praised by world leaders, humanitarian organizations, and the general public.
One of the things that sets WCK apart is its commitment to using local ingredients and resources. This not only helps to support local economies, but it also ensures that the meals are culturally appropriate and nutritious. WCK also works closely with local partners to ensure that its programs are sustainable and have a lasting impact.
In 2022, WCK was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for its work feeding the hungry around the world. Although the organization did not win, the nomination is a testament to the impact that WCK has made.
José Andrés and WCK are an inspiration to us all. They show us that even the smallest act of kindness can make a big difference in the world. If you are looking for a way to make a difference, consider donating to WCK or volunteering your time.
Here are some specific examples of the work that WCK has done:
  • After Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico in 2017, WCK provided over 3 million meals to the island's residents.
  • In 2020, WCK launched its #ChefsForAmerica campaign to provide meals to Americans who were struggling during the COVID-19 pandemic. The campaign raised over $100 million and provided over 100 million meals to those in need.
  • In 2022, WCK provided over 10 million meals to Ukrainian refugees fleeing the war in their country.
WCK is a truly global organization that is making a difference in the lives of millions of people around the world. The organization's work is a reminder that we are all connected and that we have a responsibility to help those who are less fortunate than ourselves.
