I've always been a bit of a rule follower. I like to do things the right way, and I don't like to rock the boat. But there was this one time when I just couldn't help myself.
It was a Friday afternoon, and I was running late for a meeting. I had to stop at the bank to deposit a check, but the line was out the door. I didn't have time to wait, so I did something I never thought I would do: I cut in line.
I know, I know. It was a terrible thing to do. But I was desperate, and I figured I could just apologize to the people I cut in front of later.
So I walked up to the front of the line and stood there, waiting for my turn. The people behind me were not happy, but I didn't care. I was too focused on getting my check deposited so I could get to my meeting.
Finally, it was my turn to see the teller. I handed her my check and she started to process it. But then she stopped and looked at me with a puzzled expression.
"Excuse me," she said. "But this check is for a million dollars."
I almost fainted. I didn't know what to say. I had never seen a million dollars in my life.
"I... I don't know," I stammered. "It's not my check."
The teller looked at me suspiciously. "Are you sure?" she asked.
"Yes, I'm sure," I said. "I'm sorry for the inconvenience."
The teller shrugged and handed me my check back. I quickly left the bank and ran to my meeting.
I was late, but I didn't care. I had just had the most amazing experience of my life.
I never found out who the check was for, but I like to think it was for someone who really needed it. And I'm glad I was the one who got to deliver it.
After all, it's not every day that you get to cut in line and hand someone a million dollars.
