As a man, there are certain milestones in life that can make you feel like you're on top of the world. Getting married is one of those milestones, and it's even more special when you finally get to meet your girlfriend's parents.
I remember when I first met my girlfriend's parents, I was so nervous that I could barely speak. I mean, these were the people who had raised the woman I loved, and I wanted to make a good impression. Of course, in my infinite wisdom, I decided to do this by telling them my funniest jokes.
Big mistake.
My girlfriend's parents were very nice people, but they didn't seem to appreciate my humor. In fact, I'm pretty sure my joke about how their daughter was like a fine wine (in that she had gotten better with age) didn't go over so well. Oops.
But hey, at least I tried, right? And besides, it's not like I could make things any worse.
Or so I thought.
As we were sitting down to dinner, my girlfriend's dad asked me if I could pass him the potatoes. I reached for the bowl and accidentally knocked it over, spilling mashed potatoes all over the table. I could feel my girlfriend's dad's eyes burning into me as I fumbled to clean up the mess.
"Zhang Sigler!" he exclaimed. "What in the world are you doing?"
I didn't know what to say, so I just shrugged my shoulders and said, "I guess I'm not very good at this whole 'impressing the parents' thing."
My girlfriend's dad started to laugh, and soon my girlfriend's mom was laughing too. I was confused at first, but then I realized that they weren't laughing at me. They were laughing with me.
"You know what, Zhang Sigler," said my girlfriend's dad. "I think you're a pretty good kid. Even if you are a bit of a klutz."
I smiled and thanked him. In that moment, I realized that I didn't need to be perfect to impress my girlfriend's parents. I just needed to be myself. And even though I might not be the funniest or most graceful guy in the world, I'm still a pretty good guy. And that's what matters most.
So, if you're ever in a similar situation, here's my advice:You might not be perfect, but you're still a pretty good guy. And that's what matters most.
